Being billed as “The fastest ever production Golf” is it any wonder the Volkswagen Golf R has been crashed by Greater Manchester Police already?
On the 15th December, PC Fletcher who has featured on BBC Show ‘Car Wars’ crashed and wrote off the Golf R he was testing for police duties. Fletcher, who had a Facebook group set up in honour of him after featuring on the show – “The Paul Fletcher Appreciation Society”, was testing the Golf R to see how suitable it would be for use in the police fleet. Not very, should be the conclusion for that test.
Although Greater Manchester Police are not really releasing a statement about it, they have ruled out ice as a factor in the crash. The Daily Mail reports PC Fletcher lost control after skidding and ended up with the car on its roof in the middle of the roundabout. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
PC Fletcher had to be cut from the car by the fire service and then taken to hospital where he was treated for a back injury. Whilst the CPS is deciding whether he will face criminal charges, he has been suspended from driving duties.
The GMP officer had already had the car for 2 days before the crash and other officers had also used it. Since the accident, the GMP are reviewing their policy on letting officers test the suitability of new cars.
The VW Golf R is reported to go from 0-62MPH in 5.7 secs with a top speed of 155 Mph. Whilst not a supercar as the press is describing it at the moment, it is a pretty nifty hot hatch that would leave VW enthusiasts drooling.
